Cleaning the Romanian Mountains Campaign

Between the 28th and the 30th of August 2009 a new “stage” from the EcoAssist NGO ecologists fight against the garbage was consumed in the Romanian mountains. The 21 volunteers (out of which 3 WNS Romania) arrived in Busteni for some garbage cleaning activities in the area.
“On the 29th of August 2009 we climbed to the Bucegi mountain-peaks area (Babel)…frankly I wasn’t expecting to gather 120 bags of garbage in only 5 hours, from an area so much visited and appreciated. Unfortunately self-esteem seems to be the issue with by passers, knowing that lots of tourists happily and indifferently walk past the garbage…” said Nichita Fedul.

The effort of all the volunteers is really laudable, since they managed to clean (and hopefully keep garbage away for a longer period of time) big areas from our mountains, which they returned to their dignity. Our colleagues from WNS Romania are worth mentioning; AnaMaria Neuczill, Cecilia Craia and Nichita Fedul, proved to be active participants during the activities.
We hope more residents from West Gate Park will participate in the future, and for that, we encourage them to not hesitate contacting us.

WNS ROMANIA CELEBRATES WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY BY DOING SPORTS IN THE PARK

World Environment Day (WED) was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment.

Commemorated yearly on 5 June, Wensday is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. The day's agenda is to:

Give a human face to environmental issues;
Empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development;
Promote an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues;
Advocate partnership which will ensure all nations and peoples enjoy a safer and more prosperous future.

The theme for WED 2009 is 'Your Planet Needs You-UNite to Combat Climate Change'. It reflects the urgency for nations to agree on a new deal at the crucial climate convention meeting in Copenhagen some 180 days later in the year, and the links with overcoming poverty and improved management of forests.

WNS Romania hereby invited their employees, along their families and friends, in a day out in the Tineretului Park from Bucharest on Saturday, 6th of June 2009 to do some sports. We will run, play voleyball, basketball, bring our bicycles and skates to demonstrate that our health depends on the environment.

WNS @ DANUBE DELTA GREEN PROJECT

On the 16th of May 2009, 2 WNS Romania employees — Daniela Tacu and Nichita Fedul, participated to a green action organized by the NGO EcoAssist. The scope of this activity was to clean up the Danube Delta.

Hosting 23 natural ecosystems, this is the second largest delta in Europe and a very favorable place for the development of highly diverse flora and fauna, with numerous rare species.

The implication of our colleagues was highly appreciated by the organizers and they were invited to participate to other green actions, too.

“It was a unique experience and we didn’t expect to find so much garbage in the middle of the Delta because of the ignorant tourists. But, we are proud to help this place to be more clean and we received the promise from the Biosphere’s representatives that this place will be preserved unpolluted” said an EcoAssist volunteer.

By this action, WNS contributed to the cleaning of the main Danube channel, where 100 garbage bags of 240 liters were collected from the land and from the water.

Big Companies Can Make it Harder for Employees to Help Go Green

OAKLAND, Calif. - Big U.K. firms should give employees more of a say in greening their workplaces, and U.S. companies need to live up to their eco-friendly business practices internally as well as externally, according to findings from two worker attitude surveys.

The separate surveys asked jobholders to assess their green activities and those of their employers. The U.S. workers were also asked about what motivates companies to adopt green business practices.

According to 1,200 U.K. workers surveyed by power and gas giant E.ON, jobholders at small to medium-sized firms are significantly more likely to help curb energy use and carbon emissions by turning off lights and computers and recycling than employees at larger companies, who say bureaucracy hampers their efforts.

In the U.S., a survey of 755 workers commissioned by the Marlin Company found that 63 percent considered themselves more green than their employers, and 36 percent said they believe that companies adopt environmentally friendly practices to obtain positive publicity or be politically correct.

Results of the E.ON survey were reported in the U.K. yesterday by BusinessGreen. The Marlin Company, which specializes in workplace communications, released the findings of its nationwide survey last week in Wallingford, Conn.

In the U.K. study, more than a third of the workers from small firms said they significantly changed their behavior to cut carbon emissions, and 90 percent claimed they changed their behavior at least a little. But less than a fifth of the employees at larger firms said they had changed their behavior significantly. And more than two-thirds of the respondents from larger firms said they do not feel they are in control of efforts to reduce energy use. They attributed their response to a prevalence of formal processes and a sense that they have no influence over the facilities department at their firms.

"Businesses seeking to go green must look at cutting the red tape their employees face in implementing energy efficient work practices," said Jim Macdonald, commercial director of E.ON U.K. "Our research shows that it's a feeling of needing to ask permission to make positive changes which prevents workers from taking the necessary steps. "

In releasing its survey results, the Marlin Company noted that 77.7 percent of the U.S. workers responding said it is important to them for their employers to be going green in a significant way.

However, only 50.8 percent reported that their companies had undertaken a significant green initiative such as carpooling or recycling, and just 25.8 percent said their firms provided education about how to be eco-friendly at home.

When asked what motivated companies to adopt environmentally sensitive practices, 22 percent said it was a desire for positive publicity and 14.1 percent attributed efforts to "political correctness." Saving money or combatting energy prices were cited as motivators by 37 percent, and 17.4 percent credited green practices to social responsibility.

"Companies need to do more than talk about green initiatives," said Frank Kenna III, the CEO and president of the Marlin Company. "It takes more than high-profile ads to make it happen. Employees need to see that their company is serious about it. That means concrete actions such as in-house programs for saving energy and recycling, promoting carpooling and public transportation, four-day work weeks and educating employees on home-energy conservation."

"Being green is an important part of many employees' lives and companies do a disservice to themselves and their employees by not acknowledging that," Kenna said in a statement. "Workers easily see through hypocrisy and lip service, and that certainly applies to green programs, too."

“By this campaign we tried to inform people about eco-friendly technologies and alternative products benefits. Meanwhile, we tried to demonstrate how we can do simple things for the environment and how to save money in the same time. For example, changing the classical bulbs with the economical ones will reduce the energy consumption, the CO2 emissions but also will reduce costs. The same, by installing energy efficient systems in our homes will have a positive impact on the environment and on our bills.

At this event from West Gate Park we had the occasion to interact with a young and enthusiastic public and we were very surprised to find people interested in eco-friendly products.

Spam adds heavy load to global CO2 footprint

The amount of energy used to process, filter and transmit spam e-mail in a single year is equal to the electricity used in 2.4 million homes or the greenhouse gas emissions produced by 3.1 million passenger cars, according to a landmark study released yesterday by an Internet security firm.

Santa Clara, Calif.-based McAfee, which looked at the energy used to create, store, view and filter spam in 11 countries, determined that the average greenhouse gas emissions associated with a single spam message amount to 0.3 grams of CO2. Across those 11 countries, the net effect is staggering, given the 62 trillion spam e-mails sent in 2008.

“That’s like driving three feet,” the study says. “But when multiplied by the yearly volume of spam, it is equivalent to driving around the earth 1.6 million times.”

McAfee’s report, the “Carbon Footprint of Spam,” estimated that energy consumed to create and deal with spam globally is 33 billion kilowatt-hours, or 33 terawatt-hours. In other words, spam sucks up a whole lot of energy, with the United States and India producing the highest emissions per e-mail because of intensity of use.“Countries with greater Internet connectivity and users … tended to have proportionately higher emissions per e-mail users,” the report said. “The United States, for example, had emissions that were 38 times that of Spain.”

Jeff Green, senior vice president of product development at McAfee Avert Labs, said the report highlights the need to stop spam at its source. Spam filtering accounts for 16 percent of spam-related use, he said, because most of the energy use is associated with end users deleting spam and searching for legitimate e-mail.McAfee sells security and filtering products for e-mail and the Web for businesses of all sizes. The company completed the study in conjunction with the energy consulting firm ICF International.

 WWF “CLIMATE CARAVAN” @ WESTGATE PARK

On Thursday, the 9th of April 2009, WWF and WNS Romania will bring “Climate Caravan” in WestGate Business Park from Bucharest!

The scope of this campaign is to inform people about the climate changes and about the options that we have in order to adopt an eco-friendly behavior: energy efficient products, alternative and renewable energy power systems, hybrid technologies etc.

WWF representatives and WNS volunteers will interact with the visitors from an information stand by offering them materials and information about the climate changes and eco-friendly products. Meanwhile, contests and interactive activities will be organized for the public.

This Campaign first took place in 2007 in Hungary and in 2008 WWF decided to implement this action at regional level by organizing events in different cities from Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Ukraine, Hungary, Czech Republic and Poland. In Romania, five events already took place at Bucharest, Constanta, Brasov and Cluj.

Last Saturday, on 28th of March 2009, Romania officially sustained for the first time Earth Hour and WNS is proud to be a part of this event. 500 WNS & WWF Romania volunteers celebrated Earth Hour at Piata Constitutiei by creating a big “human 60-figure” and holding candles in their hands.

Starting 8.30 P.M, Parliament Building lights went out together with all the great building around the word. The lights where switched off in five Romanian cities: Timisoara, Iasi, Brasov, Botosani and Tulcea. Then “SISTEM” played in an unplugged concert with fireworks and drums. We discussed about Climate Change today and how the stars can be seen without lighting pollution (facilitated by AstroClub Bucharest).

This year, Earth Hour has been transformed into the world’s first global election, between Earth and global warming. For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background had the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote – switching off lights was a vote for Earth, or leaving them on was a vote for global warming.

WWF was urging the world to VOTE EARTH and reached the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009. This meeting will determine official government policies to take action against global warming, which will replace the Kyoto Protocol. It was the chance for the people of the world to make their voice heard.

Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness.

In 2009, Earth Hour was being taken to the next level, with the goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights as part of a global vote. Unlike any election in history, it was not about what country you’re from, but instead, what planet you’re from. VOTE EARTH was a global call to action for every individual, every business, and every community.

On Saturday, on the 4th of April 2009, we can clean The Botanical Garden from Bucharest. The activity will start at 9.00 A.M.

WNS SUSTAINS "ROMANIA HAS NEW ROOTS"(II)

The green national campaign "Romania prinde radacini" – “Romania has new roots” continued on 22nd of March 2009 at Dabuleni, Dolj. Volunteers planted about 35. 000 trees (acacia) on areas affected by the wind and by the drought from the south of Romania on July 2008.

This project was initiated by the media trust Realitatea-Catavencu, sustained by Petrom Oil Company and MaiMultVerde Non-Governmental Organization, together with RNP Romsilva and will go on for the next 5 years, on each spring and autumn.

19 WNS volunteers (7 employees) together with the 300 volunteers from the NGO "MaiMultVerde" - "MoreThanGreen" - planted an 9ha. area. According to the statistics made by this association, they planted about 9.000 trees in 4-5 hours.

Despite of the poor number of tools, by the end of the day they required other two areas to plant and they managed to finish the work very quickly. Congratulations to all!

Our green activities started with a lot of passion and implication on the 6th of March 2009, when WNS Global Services (Romania) S.R.L. sustained the NGO “Terra Ecologica” - an association who want to green the outskirts of Bucharest - to the first planting action of this year. The weather was favorable for an eight hours hard working, when five voluntareers (two WNS employees) planted on a private property from Dragomiresti Vale about 200 trees: red oaks and black walnuts. These trees were procured with financial resources obtained by Terra Ecologica and WNS will continue to sustain them in future campaigns.

On Sunday, 15th of March 2009, 7 WNS employees and 4 of our friends, together with the Non-Governmental Organization Mai Mult Verde – “More than Green” – participated at one of the most mediated green national campaign “Romania prinde radacini” – “Romania has new roots” – at Suditi, Ialomita.

“I met at 8.00 A.M. with Pinky, Ana, Simona, Paul, Valentin, Nica, Andrei (Nica’s brother) and some of our friends in front of the Romanian Athenaeum and we left with 3 buses asleep, but enthusiastic. After a two hours trip, we were very surprised to see about 2000 people from sport, media, politics (of course) and even from police J who want to plant 35.000 trees. In this situation, we managed to plant just maximum 3 trees / person L - and we finished our area very fast. We had some pictures & sandwiched just like at a picnic – the weather was perfect – and we took with us our garbage as long as the local administration “forgot” about the bins. So, one hour of work and 4 hours of trip? Hmmm…Hope next Sunday will be less people and more trees. We saw a lot of personal cars (where are the real eco-friendly people?!) and even a helicopter - which certainly functioned on gas. A campaign just for image?” (Maria Chirila)

A story goes that a wicked man once unintentionally watered a sapling while washing his hands. On account of this he was rewarded with one day stay in heaven. The basic objective of accompanying the “Romania Prinde Radacini” team through WNS was to “Plant a Tree”, provide a simple and tangible way to make a difference. However, with the high turnaround of people made me feel that we all spoke a common language. Climate change and habitat loss are two of the greatest environmental challenges of our time. We are making extraordinary strides to restore native forests that will clean the air we breathe, filter the water we drink, enhance habitat for wildlife and create new recreation areas that we can all enjoy. This was a first of its kind activity for me, where in I never participated in India ever. However, the fact remains that as long as we plant a tree whose top will reach the sun, and its branches spread abroad, so that it can be seen afar off. VOLUNTAREERS FROM WNS & TERRA ECOLOGICA

On the 6th of March 2009, WNS Global Services (Romania) S.R.L. sustained the NGO “Terra Ecologica” - an association who want to green the outskirts of Bucharest - to the first planting action of this year. The weather was favorable for an eight hours activity, when five voluntareers (two WNS employees) planted on a private property from Dragomiresti Vale about 200 trees: red oaks and black walnuts. These trees were procured with financial resources obtained by Terra Ecologica and WNS will continue to sustain them in future campaigns.

At international level, WNS Global Services has already a tradition and an eco-friendly culture (http://www.wnsgs.com/community.php by his internal and external project named „Green Lean Sigma”. One of the main Company's value is to recognize and fulfill the responsibilities to the communities around it. One January 2008 WNS lauched a new office in Romania where started to sustain these kind of campaigns.

By exemple, on the 17th of July 2008, WNS Romania participated to a local ecological activity - clean up Dambovita river borders, at Popesti-Leordeni, nearby Bucharest. The initiative was organised by the Local Administration of District 4 - Bucharest, ‚,Apele Romane” (ANAR), Holcim (Romania) and an NGO - "Save Danube & Delta!". For about two hours, 50 voluntareers (9 WNS employees) collected almost 1 ton of waste, PETs, packs and buiding materials. The campaign "Keep the waters clean!" consists in ecological activities on the Romanian borders of the rivers.

On Sunday, the 15th of march 2009, around 12 WNS Romania employees will plant trees together with the Association "MaiMultVerde" - "MoreThanGreen" - on the reafforestation campaign "Romania prinde radacini" - "Romania has new roots" - at Suditi, Ialomita. We hope to see the results in few years. But we would like to create responsability and to implicate more and more people in order to make our town air more breathable for us and for our children.

As in Bucharest there are just a few opportunities to plant, it is necessary to develop such activities around the capital. Even if it forbidden by law, many green areas became supermarkets, business parks or parking areas.

Voluntary activities can contribute to the sustainable development during the adaption process to the climate changing.

Giving trust to such campaings means to establish rigorously rules for great results like reducing the consumption, the Co2 footprint etc. But, without a big scale gas emissions reducing, these temporary activites cannot contribue to attenuate the effects of the climate changing.

Cars are one of the great mixed bags of our time. They are at once wonders of engineering and a threat to life on Earth. They create convenience and comfort and also snarled traffic and sprawling suburbs.

This week I found a practical Car Carbon Footprint Test that should make you think carefully about how green is your car.

Perhaps the first question an environmentally conscious driver should ask, is whether they need to drive at all?

Do you really need a green car, or could you simply walk or cycle to your destinations?
If you need a green car purely to commute back and forth to work then is there a colleague who you could pool together with to share the expense – two people in one green car is far better than one person in a green car, and one in a fuel guzzling alternative.

Don’t forget to look into other ways to reduce your environmental impact too – such as by lowering the weight of your vehicle and driving with due care and consideration.

Doing your bit for the environment doesn’t stop when you hand over your money .

Review documents on screen and use "track changes" type tools when editing your work.

Send an email instead of a paper letter at every opportunity.

Buy recycled paper with a high percentage of post-consumer content and minimum bleaching.

Print on both sides of each page when possible.

Cut up misprinted material for notepaper or shred it to use as packing material.

If you have the option to send or receive a brochure in digital format, take it.

Use a personal sized dry erase board instead of using paper notepads.

Today I test my ecological footprint and the conclusion was that the amonut of the Earth's area needed every year to support my lifestyle is 2.4 hectares or 2400 squares meters, even if I don't have a car, a do not travel more then 1000 km away from my town and i eat a lot of vegetables.

To help make Valentines some shade of green try some of these eco-friendly Valentine tips:

Shop green: yes, go online instead of driving anywhere and choose online shops that are eco-friendly with sustainable business practices;

Send cards made from recycled paper or e-cards;

Choose organic and/or locally grown flowers;

Make a donation to an environmental organization on behalf of the person;

Buy the person a gift certificate for holistic therapies e.g. massage, naturopath, health spa;

Arrange dinner at a local restaurant specializing in organic or locally grown food;

Take a romantic walk in a park and admire the nature with your love.

These are just a few ideas to get you thinking, but as someone not known to be much of a romantic, I'm sure that you would have a stack of other great ideas; please add them below!

Our traditional attitude to rubbish is to throw it in the bin and forget about it. We are producing increasing amounts of waste each year, which means we are using natural resources at a faster rate than ever and putting more strain on the environment's capacity to deal with our waste products.

We need to stop thinking of rubbish as a problem to be buried in landfill and start thinking of it as a resource to be used.

This is one of the reasons we've decided to make sure that the recyclable waste that we throw away gets at the right place. It all starts from YOUR regular trash-bin. Only by sorting waste before it's trashed we can make sure that the process is correctly started:

Two of the most easily recyclable materials are PAPER and PLASTICS. By having separate bins designated for each of these two materials you can make sure that rubbish doesn't end up in the same pile.

the average person throws away 135 carrier bags, most of these could be reused.

Have separate trash-bins installed and make sure you put up the additional signs nearby thus insuring that materials get properly recycled.

Resources wasted equals money lost. Whether that waste comes out of your own home or as excess heat in the office you are working in, it is an inefficiency, and where there are inefficiencies, there is surely room for improvement.

Reducing the amount of waste that we produce is the top of the waste hierarchy and its something we can all do in our everyday lives.

This is more important then reusing and recycling because by reducing our waste we cut down on the amount of waste that enters our homes or workplace in the first place.

As residents of WestGate Business Park Bucharest, some companies - WNS, Accenture, Dacia Group and Ericsson - initiated a green project - “WestGate Won’t Waste” - based on 3 actions:

REDUCE

REUSE

RESPECT

The purpose of this campaign is to implement the same procedures for all the companies, by informing and educating, in order to reduce the impact on the environment at work and everywhere around us.

This initiative, sustained by WWF Romania, started on the 20th of October 2008 with informal videos and "Promise Cards" (flyers printed on recycled paper with some eco solutions).

In order to keep our readers up to date with these actions, the "eco" team created this blog and a second one in Romanian language - http://nu-waste-gate.blogspot.com/.

Having the support of the cleaning companies, the second step was to improve the activity of waste collection by using separated disposals.

We believe that from our home to the office, everyone can take actions that make a difference.

By applying this simple rule, we can make our work place more efficient and we can reduce our ecological footprint.
